Epi-LASIK is a surface ablation procedure similar to PRK. In Epi-LASIK, the epithelium of the eye is removed with the Amadeus microkeratome without the need for a corneal flap. Following the excimer photoablation, the epithelium is then placed back on top of the eye to provide more rapid visual rehabilitation with less discomfort than PRK. Dr. Donnenfeld was the first surgeon in North America to use the Amadeus microkeratome to perform Epi-LASIK.
