Dr. Eric Donnenfeld is New York’s leading LASIK surgeon. He is one of the original investigators of the excimer laser. Dr. Donnenfeld has been awarded the VISX Star as one of the top laser surgeons in the country every year since its inception. He has trained more surgeons to perform refractive surgery than any other doctor in New York. Dr. Donnenfeld has designed and patented four instruments for refractive surgery use, and he has written over 500 papers, books and book chapters on corneal, cataract and refractive surgery. Dr. Donnenfeld is on the Cornea Committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Ocular Surgery News. He is in the process of co-writing the American Academy of Ophthalmology Refractive Surgery Basic Science Book. Dr. Donnenfeld is a renowned international authority on refractive surgery and has lectured throughout the United States and abroad on this subject.
Dr. Donnenfeld has been performing laser vision corrective surgery since 1989 and was involved in the FDA study that led to the FDA approval of the VISX excimer laser. He has performed 37,000 refractive surgery procedures, including over 2000 on physicians and their families. Not only has he performed more LASIK procedures than any other doctor in New York, he has performed refractive surgery on more eye doctors than any other ophthalmologist in the tri-state area. In fact, more LASIK surgeons have chosen Dr. Donnenfeld to perform their refractive surgery than have chosen all other surgeons combined. In addition to his vast experience in refractive surgery, he is an innovator in the field and a principal investigator and consultant with the three major manufacturers of excimer lasers.
Dr. Donnenfeld offers the most advanced technology for the correction of vision. He is on the Advisory Board of all three major laser manufacturers and has been instrumental in improving the technology to provide the best visual results to his patients. In addition to participating in the studies which led to the FDA approval of the excimer laser, Dr. Donnenfeld was an FDA investigator for the Verisyse phakic IOL, the Amadeus microkeratome, the Technis multifocal IOL, and is performing ongoing studies with the excimer laser to improve patient results. He often has access to new technology years prior to other surgeons. Dr. Donnenfeld performed the first Epi-LASIK with the Amadeus microkeratome in North America.
Dr. Donnenfeld is a member of the Board of Directors of two leading ophthalmology societies and he is on the Editorial Board of ten medical journals. Dr. Donnenfeld has received the Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Donnenfeld is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. He has served as President of the Nassau Surgical Society and he has served on the Board of Directors of the Nassau Academy of Medicine, the American College of Surgeons, Long Island Chapter, and the Nassau Surgical Society. Dr. Donnenfeld is the Surgical Director of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island.
Dr. Donnenfeld graduated Magna Cum Laude from Dartmouth College. He graduated with honors at the top of his class at Dartmouth Medical School. He was Chief Resident at Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital. Dr. Donnenfeld completed his Cornea and Refractive Fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
In addition to being Medical Director of TLC Laser Eye Center-Garden City, Medical Director of TLC Laser Eye Center-Connecticut, and Co-Director of TLC for the New York Metropolitan area, Dr. Donnenfeld is a National Medical Director of TLC. In this capacity, Dr. Donnenfeld is responsible for evaluating the most difficult cases and for guiding all affiliate TLC doctors on clinical issues.
Dr. Donnenfeld and his partner, Dr. Henry Perry, are the leading cornea surgeons in New York. Dr. Donnenfeld and Dr. Perry have performed over 2,500 corneal transplants.
