Experienced Refractive Surgeon
Eric Donnenfeld, MD, FAAO, has been performing refractive surgery since 1989 and was one of the first surgeons in the world to do laser vision correction and was involved in the first studies that eventually led to the approval of the excimer laser. During a career spanning more than 20 years, Dr. Donnenfeld has successfully helped tens of thousands of patients achieve better vision, including more than 1,000 fellow eye doctors and their families. He is also an experienced corneal surgeon and has performed more than 2,500 corneal transplant procedures. In fact, Dr. Donnenfeld currently leads a nationally recognized corneal surgery training program.
Dr. Donnenfeld is the National Medical Director of TLC Laser Eye Centers. He offers a range of advanced vision correction procedures and eye care treatments to patients throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
As a highly respected innovator in the field of refractive surgery and a leading Long Island LASIK surgeon, Dr. Donnenfeld continues to participate in the latest research and clinical studies on laser eye surgery. He has spoken all over the world on laser vision correction. In addition, he has patented four surgical instruments and currently serves as a consultant to three major excimer laser manufacturers. Dr. Donnenfeld has been instrumental in improving a wide range of refractive surgery technologies and was selected as an FDA investigator for the Verisyse phakic IOL, Tecnis Multifocal lens and the LenSx laser refractive cataract surgery device. He was the first surgeon in the northeast United States to perform laser cataract surgery.
Educator & Author
Dr. Donnenfeld is routinely asked to help other eye surgeons advance their proficiency in refractive surgery and has trained more eye surgeons than any other ophthalmologist in New York. He has authored more than 170 papers on cornea, external disease, cataract and refractive surgery, 500 scientific articles, and 20 books and book chapters on a range of subjects pertaining to corneal transplants, cataract care and laser vision correction. Dr. Donnenfeld is on the Cornea Committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Ocular Surgery News. He is an author of the Refractive Surgery Basic Science Book for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition, he is on the editorial board of nine medical journals and has lectured at medical schools and refractive surgery meetings both nationally and internationally. Dr. Donnenfeld is editor in chief of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today.
Honors & Awards
In recognition of his accomplishments and excellent track record in the field of refractive surgery, Dr. Donnenfeld has been honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In 2005, Dr. Donnenfeld was chosen as the National Cataract and Refractive Surgeon of the Year by the journal Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today. He is also a recipient of the VISX Star Award, an honor bestowed upon a few refractive surgeons nationwide.
Education & Training
Dr. Donnenfeld graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College and was at the top of his class at Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. Donnenfeld is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. He serves on the Board of Directors for two leading medical societies and is a past board member of the Nassau Academy of Medicine, the American College of Surgeons, Long Island Chapter and the Nassau Surgical Society. Dr. Donnenfeld is a past president of the Nassau Surgical Society and is currently the Surgical Director of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island. He is on the executive board of the American Society of Cataract Surgery and will be president of this organization in 2013.
